Match the horizon to the action
An operational team deciding whether to reschedule work may need a current forecast and local warnings. A team investing in a building for several decades needs a longer view of changing conditions. Neither product replaces the other. The investment decision may also need information about how short-lived extremes could change within the longer planning horizon.
Expect different kinds of uncertainty
Short-term forecasting is constrained by observations, model representation, and the evolution of atmospheric conditions. Long-term climate analysis also explores uncertainty about future emissions and socioeconomic pathways. A scenario is therefore not a weather forecast stretched across decades. Its assumptions need to travel with every chart and summary derived from it.
Use the two together, carefully
A resilient organisation can connect strategic planning with operational monitoring. Long-term analysis helps frame investment and adaptation questions; current information supports immediate actions. Keep their purposes distinct, assign owners to each workflow, and define when new evidence should trigger a review. One unusual season, by itself, does not settle a long-term climate question.
